Monte Foreman Pelham
“Monte Foreman Versatile Humane Pelham Bit” made by Reinsman
Monte Foreman, a celebrated authority in horsemanship, meticulously crafted these Pelham bits with a focus on optimizing riding dynamics and guiding techniques, aiming for maximum versatility and efficiency. With an analytical approach, Foreman ensured that the Pelham’s design minimizes discomfort for the horse, particularly through its stationary, non-swiveling construction. He was the first person to design a humane versatile equipment for the comfort and communication to the horse.
It’s All About Comfort to the Horse
Notably, the Pelham showcases an innovative feature: the “drop-back-curb-loop,” strategically positioned to prevent pinching of the horse’s lips by hanging behind the headstall attachment area. This thoughtful design element contributes to the overall welfare and responsiveness of the horse, underscoring Foreman’s commitment to both the rider’s controllability and the horse’s comfort.
Exploring the nuances of Monte Foreman’s approach to bit design offers valuable insights into the intricate relationship between equipment and equine communication.
Variations
I have three variations of the Monte Foreman Pelham bit available; “Super-Short”, “Medium (Shank)”, and the “Medium-Divided (Shank)”.
All Three of our Monte Foreman Pelham Variations Feature the Following:
These Pelham bits, crafted by Reinsman, boast sweet iron mouthpieces designed with comfort curves for the horse’s bars and a medium-low tongue release. They’re slightly thinner than older models, making them lighter and excellently balanced. Sweet iron mouthpieces promote saliva production in the horse’s mouth. Attached to stainless steel shanks with “tipped out tops,” they won’t interfere with the horse’s teeth or jaw. They’re also equipped with a “drop-back-curb-loop” for attaching a chin strap or chain. Personally, I favor a double-linked chain for its flexibility and durability. I offer Pelhams with shanks of short to medium lengths, a feature that directly affects the pounds of pressure applied to the horse’s lower jaw.

Monte Foreman Pelhams, Specifications & Pricing
It can be ridden as a snaffle, or as a curb depending on where the reins are attached. When it becomes a Pelham it can be ridden in four reins with a running martingale for true versatility. If the bit connectors are used from the snaffle to the curb, with your curb rein in the middle, it minimizes the shank length, but still gives you the versatility of direction and collection. If you take the curb rein and run it from the curb hole (base of the shank) up to the snaffle you create a Kimberwicke action. In other words, a shanked snaffle. That can be ridden with a running martingale for better communication to a well schooled horse. With the divided bits, you can adjust the curb rein to any of the lower openings. So it starts at snaffle, “super-short”, “medium-short” or “medium” for the length to the bit. Additionally, you have no swivel sides or breaking of the mouth piece so that all communication to the horse is far more accurate and you get no jaw cracking action.
Excellent for trail riding or speed events. I sized the shank sizes down for less weight and more feel to the horse, as well as, the diameter to 5/16″ of the metal in the mouth piece.
“Super-Short” Pelham (Shorty)
Monte Foreman called it the “Shorty”. I love it for the speed horse and for any horse that has a ‘basic handle’ on them because it gives you a little bit of ‘guide’ and a little bit of ‘whoa’. The shorter length of the shank minimizes the curb effect to the horse while the snaffle ring gives you lateral control.
The Super Short is 3 inches below the mouth piece, lighter weight and beautifully balanced.
“Medium” Pelham
The medium shank is 5 inches below the mouth piece.
“Medium-Divided” Pelham
The medium-divided shank can be attached three different lengths: “super short”, “medium-short”, or “medium”.
